CAROLYN LANDERS IS 2008 LAKOTA EAST RECIPIENT OF THE
BARB BOSSU VOLUNTEER SPIRIT AWARD

For the second year in a row, a Lakota East Upbeat Club volunteer has been selected as the Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Award recipient representing Lakota East. Congratulations to Carolyn Landers!  We are also proud of Cheree Gallant who was nominated for her work with the Jazz Bands and Upbeat! Awesome volunteers!  Lakota East Upbeat Club volunteers who have won this award previously include Carolyn Young (2004), Jeff Durham (posthumously, 2005) and Steve & Pam Venneman (2007).

PTO news about the Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Award
Barb Bossu was as enthusiastic parent volunteer and the Union Elementary PTA President at the time of her death. The Volunteer Spirit Award was established in 1990 to commemorate her very special dedication to public education by honoring a volunteer each year from every school in the Lakota district. Each building determines its own recipient, and all of these special volunteers are honored at a district wide ceremony in May.

Barb Bossu Award Ceremony will be Monday, May 19, 2008 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Lakota West High School.

Anyone can nominate a school volunteer for the Barb Bossu Award. Each school’s recipient will be chosen by a election committee in April from the nominations received.

Nomination criteria:
1. The nominee must be currently involved with his or her school/s, but does not need to be a member of the PTA, PTO, or PTSO.

2. The nominee may be a highly visible, well-known person who dedicates a lot of time and energy to the children. After all, this is what Barb did with her life. The person may be a leader in your school organization or a behind the scene worker. This is not necessarily an “unsung hero award”.

3. If you have previously nominated someone who did not receive the award, please consider nominating them again if they are still doing a lot for the children.

4. This is a volunteer award, therefore a staff member may be nominated based on what they do for the children outside the realm of their normal job.

We encourage everyone to consider nominating a volunteer who is making positive things happen in their building. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your appreciation for the volunteers that truly make Lakota a special place to educate children.

======

Every year the District Parent Council honors the person in the organizations that have exhibited the spirit and dedication of a true volunteer. This award is named for a parent who through her enthusiasm and tireless effort affected many students' lives. The individual parent organizations from each building selects their recipient who best reflects the spirit of Barb Bossu.

The Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Award is given by each school in the Lakota district to people that volunteer their time, in recognition of their positive spirit and dedication to the students, and their generosity of time and talent. It is given in memory of a dedicated Lakota parent, Barb Bossu, whose untimely passing from cancer in 1989 was mourned by all in the Lakota school community.

From the Podium...

Dear Parents,

Welcome to this exciting activity we call band! We are proud to offer such a great program to our students here at Lakota East. Our bands have consistently earned superior ratings at every adjudicated event in which they have performed. This is not by luck, but by hard work, dedication, on the part of the students, directors, administrators, and parents. Without one of the four, any program would fall apart.

How can you help our program? You can help by being a part of a booster committee, a fundraising activity, chaperoning at a competition or football game, or just volunteering for something you enjoy doing that will help our students’ musical growth. Even if your busy schedule only permits you to attend our concerts or contests that would be a wonderful way of supporting our bands. There is no better feeling than playing for a full house!

These next few years will probably be the most memorable ones your child will have and the band will play a big part in these memories. The band is like a big happy (most of the time) family. The closest friends your son or daughter will have might be a part of the band. You as a parent can make the memories even more special by being a part of the Lakota East Upbeat Club (believe it or not, the kids still like having you around!)

Welcome to our future! We can’t wait to see you at the next event!
