O’Brien, Morrigan – Flute
Morrigan O'Brien is a flutist and flute/piccolo instructor in West Chester, OH, where she is finishing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in flute performance. She has been teaching privately for over 10 years, and currently teaches over 30 students from the Lakota, Hamilton, Fairfield, Mason, Wyoming, and Finneytown school districts. Her students have received numerous honors and have won chairs in area youth orchestras, honor bands, and Ohio All-State ensembles. Several of her students have gone on to successfully audition for college music performance and education programs.
Morrigan graduated from Lakota East in 2003. She completed her Bachelor of Music (2007) and Master of Music (2008) degrees in flute performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Throughout her time at CCM, she has performed with the CCM Philharmonia Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, and several chamber ensembles. She also performs frequently with local ensembles and as a soloist for weddings and other special events. Her principal teachers have included Randy Bowman, Dr. Bradley Garner, and Jack Wellbaum.
At the age of 10, Morrigan began her musical training, studying both piano and flute. She held principal chairs in regional honor bands and orchestras throughout high school, and was principal flute in Ohio All-State ensembles for 3 years. She performed in the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Great Miami Youth Symphony for 4 years. As a junior, Morrigan placed first in the prestigious Overture Awards Competition held at the Aranoff Center in Cincinnati. She has made concerto appearances with the Mason Community Band (2010), Lakota West Symphonic Winds (2009), Lakota East Symphonic Winds (2001), the Blue Ash Symphony Orchestra (2002), the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (2003), and was the featured artist for the 2003 Hamilton Mozart Festival.
Morrigan won first prize in the National Flute Association High School Soloist Competition in 2003 and was selected as one of 6 semi-finalists for the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition the following year, the youngest flutist ever to achieve that honor. She also competed in several other national competitions, placing third in the 2005 Frank Bowen Young Artist Competition and competing as a finalist in the 2005 Myrna Brown Young Artist Competition.
