All Families Asked to Donate Beverages: We request that each band member to bring in two 12-packs of soda, bottled water, Gatorade or lemonade to Band Camp on Monday morning, 7/28. We will keep the drinks cold and provide them to your band member to enjoy with lunch.

If you would like to order a 2014 “Thunder!” Show Shirt, pre-orders will be taken now through Aug. 8. The cost per shirt is $10. The shirts will be a medium heather gray color this year with all-black printing. The new band logo will be on the upper left chest and the 2014 schedule on the back.
All band members will receive their Show Shirt during the week of post-camp. The cost of the shirts is covered by Marching Band fees.
I (Carolyn Landers) will be at East during all scheduled band times for pre-camp and band camp weeks. You can come in any time to place your order. Payment is requested when ordering.

Freshmen/Rookies: Please wear socks, because you will be trying on shoes to determine the correct size.
Drumline: If you wear a harness under your jacket, you will need to wear it when you try on your jacket to get the proper fit.
Pictures for the Marching Band composite photo (done once every three years) will be taken on this day, along with pictures for the photo buttons (provided by the Upbeat Club). Please bring your instrument for the photos.
We would like everyone to make every effort possible to attend Uniform Fitting Day during their assigned time period. Please mark Saturday, Aug. 2, along with your scheduled uniform fitting time on your calendar NOW to avoid conflicts when Uniform Fitting Day arrives.
We need to have all students in uniform by Tuesday, Aug. 12, when the large group photo will be taken in the football field stands.
**Field Commanders and Color Guard will have their own fitting schedule and will not have fittings on this day, but will still need to come and put on their uniforms for composite and photo button pictures.**

9:30-10 a.m.: Last names G – P
10-10:30 a.m.: Last names Q – Z
Break: 10:30-11 a.m.
Juniors will try on uniforms:

Noon-12:30 p.m.: Last names N – Z
Break/Lunch: 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Sophomores and Freshmen will try on uniforms:

Parents: If you will be driving your student and need to wait for them,please wait in the Band Room. We will be doing the fittings in the Jazz Room, which will be very crowded to say the least! We will try to move as quickly as possible, but we want to ensure the best fit for every student and it may take some time. Waiting in the Band Room will make it easier to make sure that band members aren’t distracted and get the instruction and attention they need. You may see your band member in uniform when they come to the Band Room to have their photo taken.

Marching Band shoes (Drillmasters) will be ordered for all Rookies, and any Veterans who may need a larger size, after Uniform Fitting Day on Aug. 2.
All Veterans should try on his/her shoes and make sure they still fit and are in good condition. Please check that your name is still visible in your shoes or rewrite it with a permanent marker. Please let me know by Friday, Aug. 1, if your band member needs new shoes and the size (we use men’s sizes to order). Band members may stop in the Uniform Room during Pre-Camp or contact me by e-mail or phone (see below) to let me know if they will need a different shoe size. Veterans may also try on shoes on Uniform Fitting Day to determine what size they need. Please bring in your current pair of shoes to double-check the sizing. I plan to order the shoes on Monday, Aug. 4. The cost is $28 and must be paid before shoes before delivery to the band member. The invoice will come home with band members after the shoes have been ordered.
All Rookies will try on shoes to determine the correct size during his/her fitting. The price of the first pair of shoes is included in the fees paid for Marching Band.
Marching Band shoes must be kept clean during the Marching Band season. The shoes may be wiped clean using cleaning solution or just water, and may be shined using Armor All protectant (used for car’s vinyl surfaces).
MARCHING BAND SHORTS & EQUIPMENT BAGS
If any Veterans need new Marching Band shorts, I have them for sale in the Uniform Room. Cost is $16 each. Also, please have your band member find his/her Marching Band equipment bag and make sure it is in good condition. We have a limited number for sale if needed. The cost is $28. Rookies will receive their equipment bags when hats are distributed to the Marching Band. All hats are to be kept in the hat box for transport to and from games, to competitions and when not in use. Hat boxes must to be kept in the equipment bags when transporting them. Thank you!
GLOVES & GAUNTLETS
Gloves for Marching Band this year will be white to match the white gauntlets. Gloves may be washed and dried or washed and air-dried. A mild bleach solution may be used to keep them white and to remove stains. Each band member (except most Percussion and Guard) will receive two (2) pairs of gloves, which are included in Marching Band uniform fees. If more gloves are needed, the cost will be $3 per pair.
Each band member (not Guard) will have a pair of gauntlets assigned to them. They are sized and numbered. Please take excellent care of the gauntlets, especially because they are white! Gauntlets must be kept in the hat box with the hat and gloves. Hats, gauntlets and gloves are the ONLY items that should be kept in the hat box. Hair ties, bobby pins, etc., may be kept in the box as long as they do not touch the gauntlets (keep them in a Ziploc bag). We don’t want any item to bleed color onto the gauntlets OR have anything that may rust in contact with the gauntlets. All items in the hat box must bedry before being stored! Please clean and dry out your hat after each performance and make sure your gloves are also clean and dry. The gauntlets will mildew if not kept dry. Gauntlets may be placed in a large Ziploc bag to help keep them clean in the hat box, but do not put them back in the bag in the box unless they are completely dry! Per the uniform contract, if any gauntlets need to be replaced, the cost is $42 per pair.
SUMMER UNIFORMS / 2014 SHOW SHIRTS
are the Summer Uniform. All of these items are needed for the Pre-Season Parent Show on Aug. 15 and for the first football game on Aug. 29. Show Shirts will be given to all band members the week of Post-Camp. Show Shirts may be ordered by parents and family members with pre-payment of $10. Details coming soon!
WHAT TO WEAR UNDER THE NEW UNIFORMS
With our new uniforms comes some different ways to dress to wear them properly. Right now, we expect these to be much slimmer fitting, so no bulky clothing may be worn underneath. Under Armour or other similar exercise/compression wear is recommended. These are usually available for hot and cold weather.
At minimum, a T-shirt with sleeves must be worn under the jacket: no tank tops, camisoles or other sleeveless shirts allowed. The T-shirt has to be white or light-heather gray–no darker colors please, because they may show through the white sleeve of the jacket. If tight-fitting shorts (like bike shorts) or tights/Under Armour are worn, please wear the Marching Band shorts or other gym shorts over the top and then remove before dressing in the uniform.
Some band members may still be able to wear the Marching Band shorts underneath (we will try to determine this on Uniform Fitting Day), but nothing bulkier than Marching Band shorts should ever be worn under the pants.
All band members will need to have all-black socks that are mid-calf (crew) length or knee length–no other colors should be showing on the sock above the shoe. The pants’ hems will be fairly short and we do not want to see skin or colors on socks showing while marching.
JEWELRY AND HAIR STYLES
When in Marching Band uniform (including summer uniform!), the rule is NO JEWELRY.
*If a piercing is recent and cannot be removed, it will need to be covered with a Band-Aid. It’s best to save piercings until after the Marching Band season is over.
Even though bracelets and watches may not be visible under the uniform jacket sleeve, they still should NOT be worn because the new gauntlets are much tighter fitting and jewelry will mess up the fit.
Please consider leaving all jewelry at home.
Hair Styles/Facial Hair: All male Marching Band members must be clean-shaven while in uniform.
All hair must be neatly tucked up into the hat with no pieces hanging out. No hair should extend past the uniform collar (it’s a high collar). Practice at home putting your hair up so that it is tight and will stay in place if you have to remove your hat and put it back on. All Sousa players must have their hair tucked up into his/her beret. Pit members do not wear hats, but will need to have their hair pulled back and up off their neck and face. Remember to bring your own hair ties, bobby pins, etc., with you for every performance (or put your hair up before you arrive). If your hair is layered or just past your neck, you will have more trouble putting it up, so please practice putting it up or consider getting a shorter cut for the Marching Band season.
